Tanzania Procures 3 Electric Trains for SGR

The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has received three electric train engines and 27 passenger carriages at the Port of Dar es Salaam.

This acquisition is part of TRC’s broader strategy to enhance and modernize rail transport within the country.

To date, TRC has received a total of four engines out of the planned seventeen from Hyundai Rotem.

The corporation has so far received 56 out of the 59 passenger carriages planned from SSRST (Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology) in Korea.

How Much did Tanzania’a rail cost compared to Kenya’s SGR

The construction cost of Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) amounted to $3.6 billion (KSh 569 billion), making it one of the most costly infrastructure projects in the country when it was initiated.

In December 2022, Tanzania finalized a substantial $2.2 billion (KSh 348 billion) deal with China to establish a comprehensive Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network spanning 2,561 kilometres.

Comparing the Speed of Kenya’s and Tanzania’s locomotives Tanzania’s recently acquired electric engines boast an impressive top speed of 160 km/h.

In contrast, Kenya’s diesel-powered locomotives, despite a higher cost of $1.7 billion (KSh 269 billion), have a maximum speed of only 120 km/h, highlighting a notable disparity in both speed and cost efficiency.
