EASF Marks 20 Years of Promoting Peace and Security at Key Kigali Summit

The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), a dedicated team of military, police, and civilian personnel, convened in Kigali this week for its 33rd annual meeting.

The gathering, which runs from December 16 to 21, 2024, is focused on reviewing the force’s achievements in 2024, assessing challenges faced, and making critical decisions to guide future operations in the region.

With a mission to enhance peace and security across Eastern Africa, EASF has been a cornerstone of regional stability for two decades. The summit, taking place at the Kigali Convention Centre, provides an opportunity for experts to reflect on the progress made and address any hurdles in the way of continued success.

Brigadier General (Rtd) Kahuria Njema, Executive Director of the EASF Secretariat, expressed confidence that the discussions would bolster the force’s efforts to safeguard peace in the region. "I believe that our security experts will find innovative solutions that will strengthen regional security before the upcoming political leaders’ summit," he said.

The event was officially opened by Brigadier General Kanyamahanga Celestin, the Permanent Secretary at Rwanda’s Ministry of Defence, who extended a warm welcome to delegates from across the region.

In his opening remarks, Brigadier General Kanyamahanga emphasized the importance of collaboration and idea-sharing. “I encourage you to work together in groups and contribute valuable ideas,” he urged. “By doing so, we will help our political leaders make decisions that will enhance peace and security, not just in our region, but across the entire African continent.”

This year’s summit carries the theme: "20 Years of Commitment to Promoting Peace and Security in the Region," reflecting the EASF’s dedication and ongoing efforts to address conflicts and build stronger, more secure communities. With 10 member countries—Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, and Rwanda—the EASF stands united in its mission to safeguard the well-being of its people.

As the six-day summit unfolds, experts and leaders will continue to exchange ideas and strategies, working toward a more peaceful and secure Eastern Africa.
